A table with distinct personality
The wood for this beautiful table came from a 900 year old Yew tree which grew in a church yard in southern Scotland. The reason why Yew was grown in church yards is that it is poisonous to livestock, and there is also an ancient myth that Yew was supposed to keep witches away!
According to the church records, the tree from which this wood came is approximately 900 years old. Yew is a very slow growing tree, and if you look carefully at the grain you can almost see the effect of the centuries of weather on the wood. I am sure if the tree could have talked, it would have some fascinating stories to tell about life over the many hundreds of years.
When the tree was eventually cut down for health and safety reasons, I was lucky enough to acquire several pieces although in truth I never expected so many stunningly vibrant colours to come from it.
The table is made from wood cut from the outer side of the Yew tree, which is why there are the beautifully distinct holes in the wood as this is where the tree had grown in many directions and as it was cut it had left these holes.
The legs are made from elm wood and turned out of elm branches.
This table would be a real conversation piece in any home. The 900 year old history of the tree, the stunningly vibrant colours, and the distinct uniqueness created by retaining the natural holes in the wood.
